The Challenge - When modifying the Civic FL5 Type R to increase power and torque, an unavoidable by-product is the additional heat level that’s transferred to the car’s cooling system. During sustained hard use, this can become a substantial issue, as coolant temperatures can increase enough to trigger the ECU’s safety features, reducing torque or even putting the car into a limp mode. As a result, we wanted to address the car’s entire cooling system.
The Solution - Developed in-house at AIRTEC HQ in the UK AIRTEC designed a series of new products to address the cooling issues when pushed to the limit. This additional turbo cooler fits neatly behind the grille and is plumbed directly into the cooling circuit that flows coolant to and from the turbo to help cool it.
By teeing into the line as it leaves the turbo, the AIRTEC cooler offers an immediate reduction in temperature to help counteract the effects of the coolant being superheated as it passes through the turbo; the hottest part of the car. This helps improve overall capacity and cooling ability, allowing the car to maintain a steadier temperature for longer during hard use. This comprehensive kit also features a laser-cut and powder-coated bracket, high-quality Pro Hoses silicone lines as well as all fixtures and fittings, and detailed fitting instructions.
This can fit in conjunction with the intercooler, oil cooler and gearbox cooler combination to create the ultimate cooling package.
